THE HAWKWIND VIDEO LOG

Hawkwind haven't done that much TV or film work so there is little high quality professional footage available - especially from the early days. The band have however allowed generous access to amateur filmmakers and there is no shortage of audience filmed footage from the mid-80's on. This page attempts to bring all this together to provide something of a video chronology for one of the finest rock bands ever.

Acknowledgements:

Hopefully this resource will grow to complement these sites rather than duplicate their efforts. 1972 - Top of the Pops
7 July 1972 - Dunstable Civic Hall
Silver Machine
Hawkwind weren't keen on appearing on Top of the Pops, so the BBC filmed them live Dunstable Civic instead. Classic. Around thirty minutes of film from this gig is thought to exist (Dave Brock interview in Record Collector 162 - February 1993), with EMI perhaps having even more in the vaults. A few seconds of Stacia dancing au naturale to Orgone Accumulator was featured on the 2001 Top Ten Progressive Rock Bands programme on Channel 4. This looks suspiciously like more footage from the same gig, but it's hard to be sure...

The 2001 Top Ten of Progressive Rock show included a few seconds of film that probably originate from this gig - is the whole set on film somewhere? Who knows? If you do, let me know!!

1973 - The Final Programme
Hawkwind filmed a scene for this 1973 film of the Moorcock novel. It ended up on the cutting room floor, but here's a rare still of Michael Moorcock, actor Jon Finch (as Jerry Cornelius) with Dik Mik, Robert Calvert, Nik Turner, Stacia, Simon King, Dave Brock, Del Dettmar & Lemmy). Maybe the deleted scene will turn up as an extra on DVD one day? The Final Programme is a film by Robert Fuest.

1977 - The Marc Bolan Show
14 September 1977 - Quark, Strangeness & Charm
The band appeared as a 4-piece (minus Dave Brock) to mime along to Quark, Strangeness & Charm. Dave Brock apparently didn't turn up because Marc had had him thrown out of a party years before because Dave had shown up his guitar playing skills.

1978 - Hawklords Promos
24 November 1978 - Uxbridge, UK
Another reference from the Dave Brock interview in Record Collector 162 - February 1993, this time to a video made by Charisma to accompany the Roadhawks album. A correspondent on the old Listserv Hawkwind Discussion Group suggests these were of the band doing Automoton & 25 Years. An appearance of the Hawklords on Italian TV is also mentioned there. The Sonic Assassins book by Ian Abrahams reports the Uxbridge gig in November 1978 was filmed and may be the source for all these clips a few seconds of which were glimpsed on the 2001 Top Ten of Progressive Rock show.

1970s Audience Film

1976 - Atomhenge Tour
19 September 1976 - A 10-minute grainy, silent 8mm film, apparently from Newcastle 1976.

1977 - Quark, Strangeness and Charm Tour
20 September 1977 - Presumably from the same taper as the 1976 film, 7-minute silent film from Newcastle 1977.

Both these clips are included on Startling Stories: Do Not Panic Volume 1. Only interesting due to the lack of any other quality films from the time.

1980 - Levitation promos
August? 1980 - Who's Gonna Win The War?; World of Tiers; Levitation;
Studio filmed promos for the Levitation album, presumably filmed around the same time as the sessions for the album, which were in July/August at the Roundhouse Studios in Chalk Fam. World of Tiers appeared on a now deleted VHS Hawkwind Video Collection 1979-89. You can download a copy of World of Tiers from Starfarer's Hawkwind Downloads Page.

1981 - Lieder Und Leute - Musikladen German TV Show
14 February 1981 - Who's Gonna Win The War?
Hawkwind flew over to Baden Baden to appear on the TV Show 'Songs and People', notable for it being Ginger Baker's last appearance with the band. Motorway City was apparently also performed, but not featured on the broadcast.

MAG Festival, Cricket St Thomas & Rockfield Rehearsal was also one of the titles offered by Hawkwind Merchandising on VHS.

First official Hawkwind video produced by Jettisoundz, who have this to say about the experience at Screenedge:
"The high spot of the year was undoubtedly the production of the first "Hawkwind" video 'Night of the Hawks'. We stayed up all the previous night making new video cables to run four instead of two cameras, drove to London for the extra cameras and film school crew making it to Ipswich for the gig at 4pm on the Friday. The gig was filmed in the most chaotic way, but it worked... The Hawkwind tape was a milestone in that it was the first of our videos to feature conceptual, or made up footage along with the music. The problem was that there were long periods of darkness in the live master tape and something had to be done about it. So I created footage in a variety of ways, including some incredible staggered sequences discovered accidentally whilst rewinding the master tape through a time base corrector. The finished release resulted in our best selling tape to date, a No.1 in the video chart and some rave reviews in the music press."

The DVD release not only features the entire concert but also some beautiful shots of the festival site bathed in the morning light; time to drift away to the strains of the exclusive tracks "Stonehenge Decoded" and "Dawn" while enjoying the visuals of the holiest of all stones."

The classic stage production performed at London's Hammersmith Odeon in 1985. This is real love-it-or-hate-it territory, best approached with a sense of humour! Great performances of some classic tracks.

Filmed for the BedRock TV Show, broadcast on ITV (UK) on 10 May 1990. The following is from VoicePrint (publishers of the companion double live CD): Hawkwind made this rare TV appearance on a music show called "Bedrock". It was a strange affair, as although it was filmed live the set was interrupted a few times for the Bedrock team to make adjustments. Equally as strange, was that the lighting levels were unusually high (for a Hawkwind concert at least), this was so that viewers had something to watch, as the show was to be screened across all the ITV regions. Hawkwind's screen projections, because of the high lighting levels, had to be filmed the following day, and placed over the footage.
Wind of Change was omitted from the DVD release (though it was on the VHS video, but can be downloaded from Starfarer's Hawkwind Downloads Page).

1990 - US Tour Film

Another VHS from the early 1990's which advertised clips from these shows from the '89 & '90 tours. I know no more about this at the moment.

1992 - Gimme Shelter Promo
Hawkwind with Samantha Fox charity disc for the homeless. Sam and Richard Chadwick front an interview before some studio film of them having a sing-along to the Stones' Gimme Shelter.

An alternative version of Right To Decide is available on the Hawkwind Festivals 1984-1996. This also claims to originate from Brixton 1992, but could come from one of the other 1992 audience films (see below).

From distributors Screenedge: "Love in Space was shot during Hawkwind’s Alien 4 tour in 1995 and is comprised of the highlights taken from four venues – Liverpool Royal Court, Manchester Academy, Bristol Colston Hall and Brixton Academy London. It shows the band at there most creative and over the top, with then frontman Ron Tree wearing a vast array of bizarre costumes designed specially for the tour alongside various performance artists. The band are paired down to a four piece but have lost non of the raw power one associates with archetypal Hawkwind".

I don't know about British TV, but Hawkwind in Australia was broadcast on 20 July 2000 on Studio 22, ABC Network in Oz. The anniversary reunion gig - filmed but not released - yet. From Mr. Brock himself on hawkwind.com: "it was filmed and recorded so eventually there will be a package of edited highlights.... I have 3 hours of rehearsal / backstage video, which we will utilise at some point."
There are some screenshots at hawkwind.com and some footage was used in the Channel 4 2001 Top Ten of Progressive Rock programme.

Hawkwind were at Number 8 on this compilation show which featured some interesting snippets - interviews with Dave Brock,Lemmy & Nik Turner as well as old footage of Stacia on-stage from 1972, a Bob Calvert clip and snippets from other released material. This was followed in 2002 by a similar programme from the BBC: When Rock Ruled the World which used almost identical clips, presumably from the same source, with similar quotes from Lemmy. Classic Albums features interviews with Dave Brock and Lemmy on the Hawkwind days - going over the same old ground as Top 10 Prog Rock. Brief clip of 'Motorhead' (the song).
